If Sin There Be In Love

Full-length  ·  5 men, 5 women

Can love be sin if love is true? If Sin There Be in Love follows the unconventional sex lives of two of England's most famous poets, Percy Shelley and Lord Byron, along with Mary Shelley, and Mary's step-sister Claire. Percy, who is married to Harriet, runs off with Mary and Claire and puts into practice his ideas about free love. When Claire is dismissed from their circle, she becomes involved with Byron, the most infamous womanizer of the age, who has recently left his hopelessly incompatible wife.

Compared to Shelley's fiery passion and cocky optimism, Byron is witty, cool, and sardonic. As Shelley and Byron become acquainted, Byron reveals details of his promiscuity, bisexuality, and incest. Byron confesses his dark secrets to Shelley in the hope of finding acceptance and an end to his self-loathing. Even though Shelley prides himself on being a liberal and a radical, he cannot condone all of Byron's sexual escapades, though he and Byron differ on which are the most “unnatural.”

This is a character-focused play that provides an intimate look at people who defied social norms. The story traces their actions, the consequences of those actions, and the characters' growth in maturity and self-knowledge, exploring how far people can go in the name of love.
